In recent years, Nigeria has seen a troubling increase in kidnappings and abductions, leaving many vulnerable citizens to the nefarious activities of criminal syndicates. This pressing issue was tabled by Honorable Lukman Mudashiru (L&K), a member of the Federal House of Representatives representing Ayedire/Iwo/Ola-Oluwa Federal from Osun state.
On September 20, 2023, a tragic incident in Abuja underscored the need for action. An elderly woman, Miss Greatness Olorunfemi, was abducted by criminals after boarding a commercial vehicle in FCT’s Zone 3. She was robbed and her family was asked for a N500,000 Naira ransom.

Similar incidents have been reported in recent weeks, including a legislative aide having her phone confiscated and a journalist’s wife being kidnapped and robbed. Recognizing the severity of these crimes, Hon. Mudashiru raised the issue in the Federal House of Representatives, emphasizing the need to protect citizens’ right to life and safety, as enshrined in the Nigerian Constitution.
In addition, the government must act swiftly to address this menace and bring the culprits to justice. Honorable Lukman Mudashiru called on security agencies to investigate these cases thoroughly.

This motion is a call for the government to prioritize citizens’ safety. Nigeria must ensure the right to life, as guaranteed by Section 33 of the Constitution. Also, the rising cases of abduction and robbery not only infringe upon this right but also instill fear and distress among the populace.
Therefore, security agencies should coordinate efforts, raise public awareness, and establish emergency hotlines to protect citizens from criminal syndicates.
The tragic death of Miss Greatness Olorunfemi should not be in vain. It should serve as a catalyst for action, compelling the government and its agencies to go above and beyond in ensuring the safety and security of its citizens.
