Akin Ogunbiyi was born in Ile-Ogbo, Osun State. His parents were farmers and his father served as chairman of the Trade Association.
Akin Ogunbiyi attended primary school at A.U.D Primary School. He graduated with a degree in Agricultural Economics from Obafemi Awolowo University in Ife. He studied at the International Graduate School of Management, University of Navarra (IESE) Barcelona in Spain where he earned an Executive Masters in Business Administration.
Ogunbiyi attended Lagos Business School. He earned a degree in History and an M Sc in Industrial Relations and Personnel Management from the University of Lagos (UNILAG).

Akin Ogunbiyi, who is also an Economist and Management consultant, is an alumnus of the University of Ife (now Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile-Ife), Lagos Business School (LBS), Nigeria and Harvard Business School, Boston, Massachusetts, USA. He also attended full courses on leadership at Saïd Business School, University of Oxford, United Kingdom and Yale School of Management.
Moreover, he is an Associate Member of the Chartered Insurance Institute of London and a Fellow of the Chartered Insurance Institute of Nigeria (FCIIN). He is a Fellow of the Nigerian Institute of Directors (FIoD); Fellow West Africa Insurance Institute, Banjul, Gambia and also a Fellow of the Risk Managers Society of Nigeria (RIMSON). He attained the honour of the Commander Great Ife (CGI); the greatest honour of the renowned University of Ife.
He is an Associate of the Chartered Insurance Institute in London. He secured the highest number of distinctions in the professional examination in two sittings.

Akin Ogunbiyi is an Associate of the Chartered Insurance Institute, London. He trained in insurance in NICON. He then joined Finance and Insurance Experts Limited – a multi-disciplinary consultancy firm. Also, he is a pioneer Associate Director. Ogunbiyi is a fellow of the Institute Directors, Nigeria. He serves on the board of Infrastructure Bank Plc and other Companies. He is Chairman Of Mutual Benefits Assurance PLC.
In his entrepreneurial pursuits, he has taken quite some big risks. He gave up an impressive and promising career at NICON to go into Insurance Consultancy– a business hitherto unexplored and without a precedent of success in Nigeria. Dr. Akin Ogunbiyi was the pioneer Chief Executive.
Ogunbiyi started politics in 2018 and joined the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) hoping to become Governor of Osun State. On 23 July 2018, Ademola Adeleke emerged as the PDP candidate after defeating Ogunbiyi by seven votes.
