September 2024: A Month to Positively Impact the Personal and Dental Health of Children Living with Autism and Special Needs at the School of Special Needs, Iwo, Osun State.

In September, a significant effort is underway to positively impact the personal and dental health of children with autism and special needs at the School of Special Needs in Iwo, Osun State.
Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) is one of the most prevalent neurological disorders affecting children today. It has become so widespread that in the USA, about 4 in 100 boys and 1 in 100 girls are diagnosed with autism. Recent data from the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) suggests a prevalence of 1 in 36 children as of 2024.
Unfortunately, awareness about autism remains low, leading to delayed diagnosis and detection of the disorder among children. To date, the exact cause of Autism Spectrum Disorder remains unknown.

To support this population and other special needs children, a two-day personal and dental care program has been initiated for children living with autism at the School of Special Needs in Iwo, Osun State.
This crucial initiative is led by Dr. Adeola Folorunso, the founder of MaterMental, and Oluwafemi Ogunsakin (RDTH), a renowned dental care provider at Gateway Dental Care in Iwo. Other key contributors to this upcoming project include Dr. Ademola Bayonle (DAB Foundation), Semiloore Akerele (CEO, Mind Care Mental Health Clinic), and Lateefat Odunuga (Psychologist & Mental Health Expert).
The dental care needs of children with autism are particularly important due to various factors unique to this population. Children with autism often face challenges with sensory sensitivities, communication difficulties, and behavioural issues that can make traditional dental care experiences overwhelming and stressful. Therefore, specialized dental care that caters to the specific needs of children with autism is essential to prevent oral health issues.

Our efforts in promoting personal and dental health among children with autism and special needs aim to empower the children to take charge of their personal and dental hygiene. Additionally, we seek to educate parents and caregivers on the best ways to incorporate hygiene practices into their children’s daily routines.
By providing tailored care, creating sensory-friendly environments, and offering patience and understanding during dental visits, we will effectively address the specific needs of these children. Through education, awareness, and specialized treatment approaches, we will significantly improve the oral health and overall well-being of these children.
By championing this cause in September and beyond, we are advocating for inclusive and compassionate healthcare practices that prioritize the unique needs of these children, fostering a community of support and empowerment in Iwo, Osun State.
