As the University workers, especially the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), have suspended their activities in a bid to press home their demands from the Federal Government, students are back at home to await the resolution of the industrial action to resume their studies.

What is, however, uncertain at the moment is, how long will this resolution take to occur? While this remains unclear, it is imperative for the affected students to consider taking certain decisions to improve on their existing skills, learn new skills and acquire relevant experience to prepare them for the future, in addition to their university studies.

It is beyond denial that knowledge revolution has taken roots in Nigeria as new horizons have been developed for people to create wealth and become solution providers. With the development of new technologies and remodelling of existing ones, the imperative to acquire the matching skills is increasing by the day. In this age, those who are armed with the right skill sets are wanted everywhere.

The Charitable Youth for Nation Building Initiative is concerned with the incessant disruptions in our university campuses as a result of industrial actions. We are as well keen at seeing the students engage in productive and life-sustaining ventures so as not to lose on both ends.

A quick check on the internet or even personal inquiry from friends could tell one the list of relevant courses or skills to acquire to navigate this fast-pacing century. It will, however, be helpful to recommend courses such as Data Science, Web Design, Research And Data Development, Creative Writing, App Development etc. as possible and interesting skills to pursue by any interested students.

It could also be useful to dedicate the period to volunteering services with NGOs, firms, industries or media houses where a student could demonstrate their capacity and skills. This will certainly help them to shine using their capability and distinguishably position themselves for greater opportunity.

Besides the aforementioned courses or training, it is also interesting to urge students to look take up vocational training such as tailoring, haircut, hairdressing, furniture-making, among others, to develop themselves as technical service providers and job creators.

The dangers of idleness and misplaced priority prevailing in our society today whereby some of us jump on the bandwagon to glorify crimes even place our concerns on the front burner. We, therefore, call on parents to ensure judicious spending of this period by their wards and children so that our society can be ultimately better.
